Dutch Speech Therapy for bilingual Kids

When your child isn’t understood

Hi, I’m Elise, a Dutch speech therapist. I work with bilingual children who find it difficult to pronounce Dutch sounds clearly. I help parents understand if the pronunciation problems are caused by normal developtment or if the speech needs extra support. School or daycare might say your child needs speech therapy or you are wondering if your childs speech follows a normal development. That’s exactly where I can help. In a short free call, we can look at your child’s speech together. I’ll give you an honest, clear answer about what’s going on and whether speech therapy would be helpful. I’ll also explain everything in English, so you feel confident about the next steps.

If you have any doubts or questions about your child’s speech, you’re very welcome to reach out.

A question I hear often from expat parents

“Is this just part of growing up with multiple languages, or is something else going on?”

Many parents I work with aren’t sure what’s normal, especially when there are several languages spoken at home. It can be hard to judge your child’s Dutch pronunciation yourself, and even harder to know when to take action.

You might recognise thoughts like:

  • Maybe this is normal because we speak multiple languages at home…
  • I’m not sure if I can judge their Dutch pronunciation well enough
  • Is the school overreacting, or are they noticing something important?

If you’re unsure, you’re definitely not alone. I can help you understand if your childs speech is following a normal development or whether your child would benefit from a bit of extra support.

How it works

Free call or screening

If you’re unsure whether your child needs speech therapy, we can have a free call to take a look together and see what would be helpful.

2

Assessment of Dutch pronunciation

During the session, I take a close look at how your child speaks in Dutch.
I’ll explain in a simple and clear way what I hear, so you understand what’s going on.

3

Clear plan for support

Together, we’ll look at whether speech therapy would be helpful at this moment, or if your child is doing just fine for now.
If we start, I’ll create a plan with simple goals we’ll work on step by step.

FAQ

Does online therapy works with younger children?

Sessions for younger children usually last around 20–30 minutes, depending on their attention span.

I also take each child’s interests into account to keep sessions engaging and fun. For example, if a child loves dinosaurs, I’ll create games around that theme to help them stay focused and motivated during practice.

How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

If your child is difficult to understand, replaces sounds, lisps, or seems behind in their speech development, it might be helpful to have a closer look. If you’re unsure, I offer a free online articulation screening where we can quickly assess whether support would be beneficial.

Do I need to be present during the sessions?

For younger children, it’s helpful if a parent is nearby, especially in the beginning.

This also allows you to see how we practice, so you can support your child at home in a simple and effective way.

What do we need to join the sessions?

You’ll need a computer or laptop, a stable internet connection, and a quiet space.

I usually don’t recommend using a phone, as a bigger screen helps children stay engaged and see everything clearly. I’ll guide you through everything before the first session, so it feels easy and comfortable.
